Cascaded Augmented Transition Network

Aliases: CATN

Keywords: parsing

Categories: Natural Language

Author(s): John Carroll

An extension of Augmented Transition Network parsing to use a sequence of ordinary ATNs that include among the actions on their arcs a special operation to transmit an element to the next ATN `machine' in the sequence, with the first machine in the cascade taking its input from the input string. Provides a framework for separating, for example, syntactic, semantic and discourse tracking specifications into a cascade of ATNs, one (or more) for each domain. This clean separation of levels of processing means that different higher level partial hypotheses can share the same lower level processing, which in turn can be more flexible due to the loose coupling between the ATN machines (cf. coupling between subnetworks in an ordinary ATN).
