Functional grammar is a declarative expression of the relation between surface structure and functional structure in a natural language equally suitable for use in parsing and generation. The functional structure (or Feature Structure) is a directed acyclic graph of features and their values indicating the functional roles played by sentence constituents, e.g., subject, modifier...Functional grammar has been adopted by a number of language generation systems.
