Interlingua

Keywords: Machine Translation

Categories: Natural Language

Author(s): John Beavan

One of the two mainstream approaches to machine translation which involves using an intermediate language as a pivot between the languages to be translated, and provides at least a semantic representation of the text to be translated. The intermediate representation is usually some logic-based notation for the semantics. In an interlingual approach to machine translation the main components would be a mapping from the source language to the interlingua (analysis component), and another from the interlingua to the target language (generation component). The interlingua approach is mostly used in systems translating between many languages, where its main advantage is that only one analysis and one generation component have to be built for each language involved. Compare with Transfer.
