The productivity of word-formation processes in many languages make it impossible to have every word in the lexicon. Systematic characterisation of the regularities in a computationally exploitable fashion is the concern of computational morphographemics. The characterisation has to cover both combination and re-spelling constraints on word components. Simple ad hoc approaches to segmenting words so that their components can be looked up in the dictionary are fairly easy to devise for languages like English.
