Multi-actor System

Aliases: Multi-agent system

Keywords: communication actions, plan execution, plan generation, speech acts

Categories: Planning

Author(s): Jim Doran

A multi-actor system is a combination of two or more plan generation and plan execution systems (actors) which act and intercommunicate in a shared task environment. Communication actions between actors (e.g., request for information, provision of information, provision of partial plans) may be handled as ordinary actions and are closely related to speech acts in natural language theory. Techniques have been devised whereby one actor's beliefs about the beliefs of another may be expressed and computed. Note: this use of the term `actor' is substantially different from that employed in the actor model of computation (see Actors).
