In the context of planning, operators represent the (generic) actions which the actor can execute in the planning environment. Operators are commonly represented as three lists: a list of preconditions, a list of facts that will be true after application of the operator (add list) and a list of facts that will no longer be true after the operator is applied (delete list). These lists normally involve variables which must be bound for any particular instance of the action. The difficulty encountered in fully capturing the effects of actions in non-trivial planning domains using such operators is an aspect of the frame problem.
