Inspection methods are problem solving techniques which rely upon recognising the form of a solution. In programming, there is a set of standard forms from which a wide range of programs can be constructed. This set of standard forms includes such things as particular control strategies with unspecified primitive actions. Such standard forms are know as programming cliches. The term originates from the MIT Programmer's Apprentice project. As a result of being more abstract, programming cliches are much more adaptable concepts than macros or subroutines.
