Protocol Analysis

Keywords: games, problem behaviour graph

Categories: Expert Systems , Learning

Author(s): Richard Young

A technique for extracting the procedures used by a human problem solver from a record of selected aspects of his/her problem solving behaviour. The record may be of verbal behaviour (e.g., a `think-aloud protocol') or of non-verbal behaviour (e.g., eye-movements, or the sequence and timing of moves in a board game). The analysis begins with the building of a problem behaviour graph which serves as a `rational reconstruction' of the solution steps. Regularities are then sought and extracted, possibly in the form of a Production Rule System. Protocol analysis remains an art learned by apprenticeship.
