This is a transformation of a binary image which locates the central axis (`skeleton' or `medial-axis') of each object in the image. The general principle is to thin each object in the image to a line structure by repeatedly deleting edge pixels whose demise will not change the connectivity of the image. Algorithms are available which can also deal with three-dimensional binary images.
