The vowel quadrilateral technique employs an 8-pole Linear Predictive Coding analysis to provide 9 vocal tract log area parameters which are mapped by a principal component transformation into a plane. The principal component coefficients are calculated off-line. It can provide a real-time display of vowel position, and a further rotational transformation gives a close approximation to the classical vowel quadrilateral.
